About Us
Welcome Upper GI and General Surgical Colleagues from throughout NSW, Australia and New Zealand.
First formed in 1991, the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society was the first Specialist general surgery society formed in Australasia. Its early prominence and success was due to the efforts of a coalition of surgeons energised by the rapid advances in Surgery that occurred with the advent of new technologies and Laparoscopy in particular. Over the decades almost 30 meetings have been run, due to the requirement to run twice yearly meetings during the 90’s, so fast was the pace of change.
Every year the SUGSS meetings provide opportunities for local, interstate and New Zealand surgeons to meet and discuss leading edge techniques that consistently evolve how they practice their craft. The overseas faculty are always a “who’s who” of surgery, and when they are matched up with our Australasian faculty a packed and stimulating agenda is guaranteed.
SUGSS has been also privileged to team up with other societies for our meetings including ANZGOSA and The Australian Pancreatic Club. We also have included extra content on frequent occasions including therapeutic endoscopy and bariatric surgical workshops.
For senior trainees and fellows, this is probably the best opportunity during the year to sit side by side with your mentors and their mentors in a warm and collegial environment.
